Employment Verification Averts Illegal Workers

With immigration reform pending and federal raids making national headlines, absolute compliance with federal, state and local employment laws is critical. The risk runs high for companies that fail to authorize citizenship of their employees and the new age of immigration enforcement has been a rising concern within the business community. Staffing companies are especially vulnerable to these regulations and the companies that utilize them must heed extra precaution when putting their trust in outside services to retain compliant employees.

Since 1997, ACCU has been a proud participant of a voluntary federal program called Basic Pilot Employment Verification which gives employers access to an automated system that rapidly screens employment eligibility of new hires against federal records. The Basic Pilot helps take the guesswork out of hiring. Since its enlistment, the program has screened out over 3700 illegal aliens from ACCU’s applicant pool and yielded nearly 9500 authorized aliens.

The pilot has also served as a deterrent for non-citizens seeking work within the company. “Word spread fast about ACCU’s compliance. Illegal job seekers know that we thoroughly check backgrounds so there’s been a significant decrease in the number of those who try to obtain work from us,” says Edward H. Damm, ACCU Vice President.
