Hit A Home Run At Your Next Interview

Interviews

It’s the bottom of the 9th with two outs and you’re up to the plate with the game on the line. Some batters might be stressed out in this high-pressure situation but those who are prepared for this moment will be ready for the challenge.

A job interview may seem like a scary experience, like going head-to-head with a fast-throwing pitcher so preparation is key. Follow these helpful tips to knock your interview out of the ballpark!

Be On Time
Get there early and wait in the on-deck circle. On time for a job interview means 10-15 minutes early. Interviewers are often ready before the scheduled appointment, so you’ll want to be there when they are. Whether it’s an in-person interview or virtual, show up early.

Dress for Success
Sorry, no baseball jerseys allowed. Always err on the side of overdressing. There is no one-size-fits all approach to choosing the proper interview attire. A good rule of thumb is to dress as if you’re applying for the position above the one in which you are interviewing.

Don’t Show Up Empty Handed
You wouldn’t leave your bat or glove when you’re heading to the ball field so always remember to bring your resume to the interview. In fact, bring several copies just in case you’re meeting with multiple interviewers. Should you have any reference letters, a work portfolio, or business cards, bring these as well. Carry all items in a folder to keep them nice and organized.

Do Your Research
You want to be able to hit every pitch the interviewer throws at you so learn as much as you can about the company. Research the company’s culture, mission, values, services, products, customers, and competition. Use this information to weave into the conversation with the interviewer. This will demonstrate you are dedicated and help to give you some insight into the needs, challenges, and successes of the company.

Now that we’ve covered all the bases, you’re ready to step to the plate.
